Men in Moffitt’s prostate cancer program receive individualized treatment plans based on their age, overall health and specific type of malignancy. In cases where the cancer is in an early stage and has not spread, a physician may suggest an "active surveillance" approach, where therapy is delayed until the cancer begins to metastasize or cause symptoms in an effort to avoid side effects from unnecessary treatment.

In cases where immediate action is recommended, treatment plans may include:

Traditional or robotic-assisted surgery to remove tumors, affected tissues or nearby lymph nodes.
Chemotherapy and radiation therapy to destroy cancer cells with medicines or high-energy X-rays.
Biological therapy to promote the body’s natural abilities to fight off cancer and heal itself.
Bisphosphonate therapy to help prevent cancer from spreading to nearby bones.
