Genetic counseling and genetic testing have grown to become an important part of cancer care. At Moffitt Cancer Center, our team of board-certified genetic counselors is available to meet with patients to assess their hereditary risk of cancer.

three generations of family

If you have been diagnosed with cancer, your Moffitt doctor may refer you for genetic counseling to discuss if genetic testing may be right for you. The information from a genetic test may help plan the most appropriate surgery or identify targeted immunotherapies that could be effective in your treatment plan. It can also help identify if your family members could be at higher risk of cancer.

Our team of genetic counselors also:

  • Meet with individuals with strong family histories of cancer who would like to learn more about their inherited cancer risks
  • Have expertise in analyzing family histories to provide recommendations for surveillance and risk reduction
  • Review the benefits and limitations of genetic testing, insurance coverage, confidentiality, family planning, and other questions and concerns you may have.

Our goal is to empower patients to make the right decision for themselves regarding genetic testing.

Our program has been recognized as a specialty referral center by the following organizations: Collaborative Group of the Americas Inherited Gastrointestinal Cancer (CGAIGC), National Society of Genetic Counseling Pediatric Cancer Special Interest Group, Li-Fraumeni Syndrome Association (LFSA), Lynch Syndrome Screening Network (LSSN) and No Stomach for Cancer.

After receiving genetic counseling, patients decide whether they would like to move forward with genetic testing and what testing they would like to pursue. To learn more about how genetics can influence your individual cancer risk, or to schedule a visit for a genetic risk assessment, call 1-888-663-3488 or complete a new patient registration form online. We currently offer genetic counseling and testing services both in-person at the McKinley campus and with telehealth via Zoom for patients currently in the state of Florida. No referral is required to seek treatment at Moffitt.
