Brain tumor boards offer a multispecialty approach to neurological cancer treatment. A tumor board is a diverse group of physicians who are experts in different specialties, all of whom focus on the treatment of a specific type of malignancy. These specialists meet to review patient cases, exchange ideas, challenge each other and discuss treatment options.

Through extensive collaboration and synergy, brain tumor boards make it possible for patients to receive fully coordinated care and an optimal treatment plan. Additionally, patients receive the benefit of multiple expert opinions without having to schedule a separate consultation with each specialist.

How do brain tumor boards work?

A physician may present a patient’s case to a multispecialty neurological team for input immediately after a brain cancer diagnosis is confirmed or at any point during the patient’s treatment journey if multiple expert opinions would be helpful. The patient is not present during the tumor board meeting.

In general, brain tumor boards review all available information on a patient’s case, including his or her medical history, diagnostic test results, pathology slides and imaging studies, such as MRIs and CT scans. The patient’s physician will then contact him or her after the conclusion of the meeting to explain the tumor board’s recommendations.
