Moffitt Cancer Center’s Malignant Hematology Program is composed of three condition-specific sections: Leukemia/MDS, Lymphoma and Myeloma. Each section is staffed by highly specialized surgeons, physicians and other medical professionals who focus exclusively on their respective disciplines. This means that Moffitt’s patients receive the concentrated attention of experts in their particular conditions.

Our program’s researchers, physicians, surgeons and other medical professionals specialize in the study, evaluation, treatment and comprehensive care of patients with an assortment of hematologic malignancies, including all forms of lymphoma, leukemia, myeloma and myelodysplastic syndromes (MDS). Recognized as a Center of Excellence by the MDS Foundation, Moffitt is also one of the founding institutions of the Bone Marrow Failure Disease Consortium (BMFDC), which was recently funded by the National Institutes of Health. Moffitt has developed and maintains the consortium’s national database of all patients with:

  • MDS
  • Large granular lymphocytic leukemia
  • Aplastic anemia
  • Other rare causes of bone marrow failure

The BMFDC is the first and only cooperative network developed by the National Institutes of Health for the study of the biology of these disorders and the development of novel therapeutics to address them. In fact, our MDS program is one of the largest in the nation.

Moffitt’s Malignant Hematology Program has achieved national and international recognition for its research on T-cell large granular lymphocytic leukemia. Additionally, Moffitt’s multidisciplinary cutaneous lymphoma clinic serves as the largest referral center in Florida for patients who have been diagnosed with rare hematologic disorders, which has allowed us to gain an unprecedented level of experience in diagnosing and treating these conditions.
