A GYN (gynecological) oncologist is a physician who specializes in diagnosing and treating cancers of the female reproductive system. In contrast to general oncologists, who tend to treat many different conditions throughout their careers, oncologists who focus on diagnosing and treating this highly specific class of women’s cancers often have a higher level of specialization. This allows them to make more tailored treatment recommendations (and modifications, if necessary).

Typically, a GYN oncologist has clinical expertise pertaining to cancers of the cervix, ovaries, uterus, vagina and vulva. At Moffitt Cancer Center, our gynecologic oncology team is composed of several different members, including:

  • Medical gynecologic oncologists who specialize in chemotherapy
  • Surgical gynecologic oncologists who specialize in traditional and minimally invasive procedures
  • Radiation oncologists who exclusively treat gynecological conditions with radiation therapy

We also have a designated team of researchers who are continually investigating the newest and most effective treatments for gynecological cancers. Our scientific research program has helped advance some of today’s most promising therapies, such as minimally invasive surgery for ovarian cancer. Patients can benefit directly from advances like these as soon as they become available by participating in our gynecological oncology clinical trials.

Patients are welcome to consult with a GYN oncologist at Moffitt, whether they have a confirmed diagnosis or have recently started to notice abnormal gynecological symptoms. We offer a full spectrum of diagnostic services, as well as second opinions and treatment consultations. Referrals are welcome, but never required.
