A laparoscopic radical prostatectomy is a minimally invasive procedure that is commonly used in the treatment of prostate cancer. The goal of the surgery is to remove part or all of the prostate gland, along with any nearby lymph nodes that might also contain cancerous cells. However, if a patient’s cancer has spread beyond the local lymph nodes, a different operation may be more effective.

To perform a laparoscopic radical prostatectomy, a surgeon will use a series of small incisions (typically in the abdomen, but sometimes in the perineum) to access the patient’s prostate. Then, a thin tube with a camera at the end will be used to guide the surgical removal of the prostate gland and lymph nodes.

When possible, surgeons often use minimally invasive, laparoscopic techniques (rather than traditional, open techniques) while performing a prostatectomy. That’s because laparoscopic prostate surgery provides a number of benefits, including:

  • Shorter recovery times
  • Smaller incisions and less scarring
  • Less pain and fewer complications
  • A higher postoperative quality of life

Moffitt Cancer Center is home to some of the most skilled surgeons in the field, including several experts in laparoscopic prostate surgery. And, patients who turn to Moffitt for a laparoscopic radical prostatectomy aren’t just seen by one oncologist, but rather a multispecialty team of surgeons, physicians, anesthesiologists, nurses, lab experts and supportive care providers, all of whom work exclusively with prostate cancer patients. This collaborative approach allows us to produce exceptional patient outcomes, while maintaining high patient satisfaction rates.

Because of our long-standing commitment to utilizing the most innovative cancer care, such as robotic and laparoscopic alternatives to prostate cancer surgery, and making great strides in prostate cancer research, the National Cancer Institute has named us a Comprehensive Cancer Center. We are the only such center based in Florida.

Referrals are never required to access all that Moffitt has to offer. To learn more about a laparoscopic radical prostatectomy or any other prostate cancer surgery that we perform, call 1-888-663-3488 or schedule a visit online.
