Patient getting a lung cancer treatment checkup

The latest innovations in lung cancer treatment are available to residents of Orlando, Florida, in the Thoracic Oncology Program at Moffitt Cancer Center in Tampa. At Moffitt, we take a multispecialty approach to cancer treatment. Each patient receives a customized treatment plan that is developed based on input from a tumor board comprised of experts who focus exclusively on treating lung cancer. Throughout the treatment process, we continually monitor each patient’s progress and fine-tune his or her treatment plan as needed.

Moffitt offers a comprehensive range of lung cancer treatment options, including:

  • Surgery – Depending on a patient’s needs, a surgeon may remove a tumor, a part of the lung or all of the lung, along with some nearby lymph nodes and healthy tissue. Moffitt’s surgeons are skilled in using advanced surgical techniques, including minimally invasive procedures performed with the assistance of the highly precise da Vinci® Surgical System, to help improve patient outcomes and quality of life.
  • Radiation therapy – High-energy X-ray beams can be delivered externally, from a machine (linear accelerator) located outside a patient’s body, or internally, from radioactive seeds that are surgically implanted near a tumor site.
  • Chemotherapy – Powerful medications can be administered orally or intravenously so that they enter the bloodstream and travel throughout the body to reach and destroy widespread cancer cells.

As a nationally recognized pioneer of cancer research, Moffitt has made many groundbreaking advances in the prevention, diagnosis and treatment of lung cancer. The National Cancer Institute has designated Moffitt a Comprehensive Cancer Center (the only such center based in Florida). Through our robust portfolio of clinical trials, our patients have numerous opportunities to benefit from promising new options that aren’t yet available in other settings. For all of these reasons and more, we provide all patients who come to us for treatment – whether they are local, from Orlando or from another out-of-town area – with an additional source of hope, as well as an upper hand in the fight against cancer.

In addition to world-class cancer treatment, Moffitt offers exceptional supportive care services. Upon request, our team can provide useful information designed to help our out-of-town patients eliminate travel-related barriers to receiving lung cancer treatment at Moffitt, such as recommending convenient and affordable hotels.
