Upon reviewing a patient’s case, our multispecialty team might recommend one of the following uterine cancer surgery options as part of the patient’s comprehensive treatment plan, or even as a standalone treatment for her endometrial cancer:
- Total hysterectomy – With a bilateral salpingo-oophorectomy, the procedure involves the removal of the uterus, cervix, fallopian tubes and ovaries.
- Hysterectomy – The surgeon removes the uterus and cervix.
- Radical hysterectomy – The surgeon removes the uterus and the surrounding ligaments that hold it in place in the pelvis. The cervix and the upper part of the vagina are also removed.
- Pelvic exenteration – Also known as pelvic evisceration, the bladder, urethra and the rectum are removed. Once the exenteration is performed, the surgeon reconstructs the vagina using tissues from other parts of the body to create a permanent colostomy and urinary diversion.Â
Our tumor board meets on a weekly basis to discuss each patient’s treatment options and assess his or her progress. This talented team looks at a range of key factors, including the size and location of the tumor, to refine the patients’ treatment plan as needed. This is one of the ways we make sure our uterine cancer surgery patients from Fort Myers and Naples, FL, benefit from the expertise of several professionals in a single, convenient location.
