As the only Florida-based National Cancer Institute-designated Comprehensive Cancer Center, Moffitt has been recognized for its commitment to delivering the best in cancer care through a collaborative team approach. Before recommending prostate cancer surgery or other treatment options, our multispecialty tumor board evaluates a patient’s circumstances in depth. Guided by evidence-based pathways, these experts consider every unique facet of the patient’s case in order to determine the optimal course of treatment.Â
If prostate cancer surgery is recommended, the fellowship-trained surgeons at Moffitt can perform:
- Radio-frequency ablation – Guided by ultrasound or MRI technology, a surgeon inserts a needle electrode into a tumor and then delivers high-frequency electrical currents to destroy the cancer cells.
- Laparoscopic radical prostatectomy – A surgeon inserts a lighted viewing instrument called a laparoscope into a small incision in the abdomen. Guided by the enhanced view provided by the laparoscope, the surgeon then inserts special instruments through other small incisions to reach and remove the prostate.
- Robotic-assisted laparoscopic radical prostatectomy – A specially trained surgeon removes the prostate using robotic arms that are inserted through small incisions in the abdomen. The robotic arms allow the surgeon to make highly precise hand movements.
- Traditional surgery – Using a nerve-sparing technique, a surgeon removes the prostate gland through an incision in the lower abdomen or perineum.
