Doctors look at x-rays of a patient's skull

A common treatment for skull base tumor patients is surgery. Due to their location near critical nerves and blood vessels around the brain, spinal cord, head and neck, it’s crucial to select a high-skilled neurosurgeon who has experience treating skull base tumors.

Choosing a Skull Base Tumor Surgery Specialist in Florida

Moffitt Cancer Center is a high-volume cancer center and, as a result, we see many skull base tumor patients and the neurosurgeons in our Neuro-Oncology Program perform a high number of complex brain cancer surgeries and procedures.

Types of Skull Base Tumor Surgery

Each patient is unique and our treatment team develops a treatment plan for each individual patient. Depending on the course of treatment and location of the skull base tumor, patients may have an open conventional surgery or a minimally invasive surgery

Open conventional surgery requires incisions around the face and in the skull. Parts of bone may also need to be removed so that the tumor can be reached.

Two types of minimally invasive surgeries include:

  • Endoscopic endonasal surgery - this innovative surgical technique utilizes a high-definition surgical telescope to go through the nostrils and nasal sinuses as natural corridors. This type of surgery allows safe tumor resection without incisions in the face or scalp while minimizing brain tissue retraction and manipulation.
  • Keyhole surgery - this surgery is performed through a small and precise bone opening in the skull that minimizes damage to the surrounding scalp, muscle, and most importantly, brain tissue.
