Doctors review brain x-rays

The treatment options for low-grade glioma vary by patient but typically it includes surgery, often in combination with radiation therapy or chemotherapy. The majority of patients with low-grade gliomas respond well to treatment.

Choosing a Low-Grade Glioma Specialist in Florida

The multispecialty team in Moffitt Cancer Center’s Neuro-Oncology Program specializes in the treatment of low-grade glioma and other brain cancers. Our highly-trained specialists meet weekly as a tumor board to review each patient’s case to collaboratively develop individualized treatment plans.

Low-Grade Glioma Treatments

Surgery is the common primary treatment for low-grade glioma. For some patients, surgery is the only treatment needed. For others, radiation therapy or chemotherapy may also be recommended. Types of surgery include:

  • Awake craniotomy – a patient remains awake during this procedure. By remaining conscious, a patient can help a surgeon avoid essential gray matter surrounding a tumor by responding to questions and performing some simple tasks, such as moving fingers. An awake procedure leads to easier recovery, with about 75 percent of patients able to go home 24 hours or less after surgery.
  • Resection – surgery to remove as much of the tumor as possible while minimizing damage to the normal brain
