Bladder cancer surgery may be recommended for a patient who has been diagnosed with a bladder tumor. At Moffitt Cancer Center in Tampa, we use advanced surgical techniques, including laparoscopic (minimally invasive) and robot-assisted surgery, to enhance patient outcomes, and our experienced surgeons help many patients beat cancer and live better-quality lives. We welcome patients from West Palm Beach and other areas of Florida.

Moffitt’s multispecialty team of surgeons, oncologists and other medical professionals may recommend bladder cancer surgery for a patient after evaluating many individual factors, including the stage and extent of the cancer, the location of the tumor and the patient’s general health. Commonly recommended procedures include:

  • Transurethral surgery (TUR) – Early-stage tumors situated on the surface of the bladder are removed with a resectoscope, which is inserted through the urethra to eliminate the need for an abdominal incision. This procedure may be followed by fulguration to remove residual cancer cells with a high-energy laser.
  • Segmental cystectomy – An affected portion of the bladder is removed, and the remainder of the organ is sealed to retain bladder function.
  • Radical cystectomy with extended lymph node dissection – The entire bladder and surrounding lymph nodes are removed. The prostate gland (in men) or the ovaries, fallopian tubes, uterus and a portion of the vagina (in women) may also be removed.
  • Reconstructive surgery – Following a radical cystectomy, the passage and storage of urine may be adjusted to restore bladder function.

In addition to the latest bladder cancer surgery techniques, Moffitt offers a comprehensive range of services, including lab screenings before surgery and post-operative support to aid our patients throughout the recovery process.
