A doctor helping a patient with paperwork

For patients who have been diagnosed with bladder cancer, surgery may be recommended. Many individuals in Orlando, FL, and the surrounding areas seek treatment for bladder cancer at Moffitt Cancer Center in Tampa. As a high-volume cancer center, Moffitt has highly experienced surgeons who use advanced techniques to help many patients beat cancer and achieve better-quality lives.

There are several bladder cancer surgery options available at Moffitt, where a multispecialty team of surgeons, oncologists and other medical professionals reviews each patient’s case to create an individualized treatment plan. After considering many unique factors, including the stage of a cancer and the general health of a patient, our team may recommend:

  • Segmental cystectomy – A section of the bladder and some nearby lymph nodes are removed.
  • Radical cystectomy with extended lymph node dissection – The entire bladder and some surrounding lymph nodes, as well as the fallopian tubes, uterus, ovaries and a portion of the vagina in women, or the prostate gland in men, are removed.
  • Reconstructive surgery – If a patient’s bladder is removed, reconstructive surgery may be used to reroute the passage and storage of urine.
  • Transurethral surgery (TUR) – A surgeon removes early-stage, noninvasive tumors from the surface of the bladder using a resectoscope that is inserted through the urethra, eliminating the need for a surgical incision. This type of bladder cancer surgery is typically followed by fulguration, a treatment that removes residual cancer cells with a high-energy laser.

Moffitt offers a comprehensive range of treatments as well as pre- and post-operative services in a single location for the convenience of our patients. For individuals who travel from Orlando, FL, we can also provide information on local accommodations, many of which offer discounts to our patients and their family members and provide shuttle services to and from our cancer center.
