Treatment for Colon Cancer
Comprehensive treatment for colon cancer is available at Moffitt Cancer Center. Moffitt offers the latest advances in colon cancer treatment from experienced medical oncologists, radiologists, surgeons and other experts through our Gastrointestinal Oncology Program. Each of our patients is provided with an individualized treatment plan that addresses the specifics of their diagnosis, helping them experience a better quality of life and a positive outcome.
Colon cancer treatment varies from patient to patient according to the specific type and extent of the malignancy, as well as the patient’s overall health, but most treatment plans include a combination of surgery, radiation therapy and chemotherapy:
- Surgery – Used to remove cancerous growths from the colon, surgery is the primary form of colon cancer treatment. Patients who have been diagnosed early may be candidates for minimally invasive procedures, while more extensive surgery may be recommended for patients whose cancer has spread through the colon.
- Radiation therapy – This form of treatment uses high-energy rays to destroy cancerous cells. It may be administered before surgery to reduce the size of tumors, or after surgery to eliminate any remaining cancer.
- Chemotherapy – This therapy uses powerful medications to destroy cancer, including cancerous cells that have spread to surrounding lymph nodes or other areas of the body. It is usually administered in multisession cycles.
Other possible treatment options include proton therapy, targeted drug therapy and tumor ablation. Supportive care treatments are also available to help patients cope with the challenges of colon cancer and any negative side effects of its treatment.
In addition to providing a full spectrum of established colon cancer treatments, Moffitt spearheads robust clinical trials and research to develop innovative new therapies for colon cancer and other colorectal malignancies. As such, Moffitt has been named a Comprehensive Cancer Center by the National Cancer Institute.
