Prostate Cancer Surgery
Moffitt is at the forefront of prostate cancer treatment. At our urologic oncology clinic, a multispecialty team of physicians reviews each patient’s unique case in a collaborative tumor board to recommend the most appropriate treatment options. Depending on each patient's specific needs, we may recommend surgery. Our expert prostate cancer surgeons offer minimally invasive surgery and a full range of treatment and support options – all under one roof.
Who is a candidate for prostate cancer surgery?
Surgery is commonly recommended when prostate cancer has not spread outside of the prostate gland or beyond local lymph nodes. In these cases, the goal of surgery is to completely remove the cancer. There are other situations, however, when surgery may be used to improve a patient’s quality of life. For instance, a tumor may be causing urinary issues, and surgery may be used to alleviate symptoms. Every patient and cancer is unique, and there are many factors that a patient’s treatment team will need to take under consideration when determining whether he is a candidate for surgery, such as the patient’s age, overall health prior to surgery and the extent of the cancer’s progression.

There are various approaches that surgeons may use to perform prostate cancer surgery. Prostate cancer surgery options include:
- Radio-Frequency Ablation (RFA) – RFA is a minimally invasive localized procedure, involving an image-guided technique that heats and destroys cancer cells. Imaging techniques such as ultrasound or magnetic resonance imaging (MRI) are used to help guide a needle electrode into a cancerous tumor. High-frequency electrical currents are then passed through the electrode, destroying the cancer cells.
- Robotic surgery – Some procedures, such as a nerve-sparing surgery, may be performed with the assistance of a robotic system. Robotic surgery can lead to faster recovery times and better pain management for patients.
- Laparoscopic radical prostatectomy or a robotic prostatectomy – The procedure is used to remove cancerous growths along with nearby tissue and/or lymph nodes that may be affected.
Moffitt’s Urologic Oncology Program is accredited through the Society of Urologic Oncology (SUO). In addition, our fellowship program, which trains new oncology fellows, is also SUO accredited. We are proud that our treatment and support provides our patients with an enhanced quality of life. Our clinic is always accepting new patients – whether looking for an initial diagnosis, a second opinion, or a comprehensive treatment plan including surgery.
