Breast Imaging Fellowship
Our mission is to provide accurate, timely, cost-effective and consultative services to patients and physicians practicing at H. Lee Moffitt Cancer Center & Research Institute and its affiliates. We maintain the highest levels of quality to ensure the most accurate diagnostic services for both the patient and the attending physician. The Division of Breast Imaging in the Department of Diagnostic Imaging is committed to assisting the Cancer Center in its mission of contributing to the prevention and cure of cancer.
We provide a full range of testing, as well as consultation services to both inpatients and outpatients. Breast Imaging members collaborate with other departments at the University of South Florida to provide a full academic curriculum for the university's medical students (residents & fellows). The radiologists are all certified by the American College of Radiology and MQSA. The quality of work is continuously monitored by internal and external quality control programs, by participation in proficiency testing and by participation in hospital-wide quality improvement programs.
The breast imaging services at Moffitt Cancer Center are peer-reviewed evaluations, conducted in each breast imaging modality by physicians and medical physicists who are experts in the field, and have determined that this facility has achieved high practice standards in image quality, personnel qualifications, facility equipment, quality control procedures, and quality assurance programs.
Moffitt Cancer Center’s Breast Imaging program is fully accredited in mammography, dedicated breast MRI, stereotactic biopsy, ultrasound and ultrasound-guided biopsy, with individualized state-of-the-art advanced breast imaging. Our radiologists give the patients a caring environment with a passion for communication, education and cutting edge research.
Our Breast Imaging program has been designated a Breast Imaging Center of Excellence (BICOE) by the American College of Radiology (ACR). The BICOE designation is awarded to breast imaging centers that achieve excellence by seeking and earning accreditation in all of the ACR’s voluntary breast-imaging accreditation programs and modules, in addition to the mandatory Mammography Accreditation Program.
The fellowship is designed to complement and supplement prior training in breast imaging, image-directed biopsy techniques and to provide in-depth basic and clinical knowledge and the highest level of professional competency in direct patient care and consultations. We are committed to providing:
- A scholarly environment for acquiring cognitive and procedural skills.
- Extensive supervised training and education so that the fellow can acquire special skills and knowledge in the area of breast imaging, encompassing the newest techniques of diagnosis, screening and treatment with a focus on the psychosocial adjustment of the patient throughout their care.
- A comprehensive, academically oriented, hands-on fellowship training experience in all aspects of Breast Imaging at H. Lee Moffitt Cancer Center, the only National Cancer Institute (NCI) designated Comprehensive Cancer Center in the State of Florida.
Fellows are provided significant opportunities to enhance their training by attending a variety of educational sessions/conferences throughout their fellowship. Fellows are required to attend three to five hours of educational sessions/week. Educational conferences include multi-disciplinary conferences, GME-sponsored Core Lecture Series, Journal Clubs, Morbidity and Mortality conference and Grand Rounds.
Fellows are expected to complete one research project before the end of their fellowship year and to present this at a local or national meeting. Support for the research activity of the fellows is provided by the Moffitt Cancer Center GME office and the Research Coordinator. The fellow is required to present at Moffitt Cancer Center’s Scientific Symposium in May. The fellow has protected time each week for research. Depending on the level of interest in research, the fellow could be allowed more time, that is, an extra week or two during the year.
