Center for Immunization & Infection Research in Cancer (CIIRC) Events
CIIRC organizes multiple events every year to engage members and inform the public.
Seminar Series
The CIIRC seminar series brings experts in vaccines and infection-related cancers from across the country, as well as Moffitt’s own leading researchers, to share their latest research.
HPV Awareness Day
Human papillomavirus (HPV) causes six different cancers in women and men. In fact, 1 in 20 cancers worldwide are caused by HPV. March 4 is International HPV Awareness Day – a day to march forth and eliminate these cancers – and CIIRC, in partnership with Moffitt’s Office of Community Outreach, Engagement, and Equity, is leading the charge in Florida. In 2020, Moffitt worked with the American Cancer Society to host a Leadership Summit for providers and key community stakeholders to discuss how we can eliminate HPV-related cancers in Florida. In 2019, CIIRC Director Dr. Anna Giuliano and Dr. Susan Vadaparampil were interviewed by Gayle Guyardo on WFLA to talk about the importance of HPV vaccination and cervical cancer screening. CIIRC also hosted a press-conference at Moffitt with Congresswoman Kathy Castor.
Congressional Briefing to Eliminate HPV-Related Cancers
CIIRC worked with the American Association for Cancer Research, Prevent Cancer Foundation, American Society of Clinical Oncology, Biden Cancer Initiative, St. Jude Children’s Research Hospital, American Cancer Society Cancer Action Network, and the Union for International Cancer Control to hold a Congressional Briefing in Washington, D.C. on the urgent need to eliminate HPV-related Cancers, starting with cervical cancer. CIIRC continues to be a leader in the effort to eliminate HPV-related cancers, which researchers project could be accomplished in some geographic areas as early as 2030. Thanks to this work, Florida was the first state to add a goal of eliminating cervical cancer to its state cancer plan.
CIIRC Retreat
The CIIRC retreats provide opportunities for members and CIIRC leadership to discuss CIIRC’s research portfolio and engage in strategic planning for the center of excellence.
