Overview
Cancer Focus: Osteosarcoma, Sarcoma Dr. G. Douglas Letson is executive vice president of clinical affairs and physician-in-chief at Moffitt Cancer Center, as well as prior chair of the Sarcoma Department. In addition, he is a professor of surgery, radiology and orthopaedics at the University of South Florida. As an orthopaedic oncology surgeon, Dr. Letson’s research and clinical interests include: novel therapeutic agents to treat sarcoma; limb salvage for bone and soft tissue tumors; as well as segmental prosthesis, new hinge designs and soft tissue attachment for metallic prosthesis. Dr. Letson has a keen interest in new techniques and design of instrumentation for minimal invasive reconstructive surgery. He collaborated with Stanmore Corporation in England to develop a non-invasive leg lengthening implant, and he is the only physician in the United States to implant and lengthen the limbs of several children successfully. A graduate of Louisiana State University School of Medicine, Dr. Letson completed his residency in orthopedics at LSU affiliated hospitals, where he was chief resident at LSU Children’s Hospital. He pursued advanced training through a musculoskeletal oncology fellowship at Massachusetts General Hospital-Harvard Medical School and was awarded Clinical Oncology Fellow of the American Cancer Society. Prior to joining Moffitt in 2000, he was with the Watson Clinic in Lakeland, FL, and with the Florida Orthopaedic Institute in Tampa. Dr. Letson is a frequent guest speaker at local and international physician conferences and has received numerous awards, including American Orthopaedic Academy Honor Society, Professor of the Year at Orlando Regional Healthcare, Teacher of the Year for the USF Radiology Department and Best Doctors in America.
