Are My Symptoms Indicating Stomach Cancer or Something Else?
The symptoms of stomach cancer can be difficult to recognize, especially when the cancer is in its early stages. This is because many of the symptoms of this malignancy are similar to those of other conditions, like an ulcer or a stomach bug.
Symptoms of early stage stomach cancer
The symptoms of early stage stomach cancer are not serious, and often go ignored. However, stomach cancer is usually more treatable when it is detected early, so individuals – especially those at a heightened risk of developing stomach cancer – should be aware of the symptoms so that they can be shared with a physician as soon as they appear. Some symptoms of early stage stomach cancer include:
- Pain or discomfort in the stomach area
- Indigestion
- Heartburn
- Trouble swallowing
- Loss of appetite
- Feeling full after eating a small amount of food
- Jaundice
- Feeling like you have food stuck in your throat while eating
Symptoms of advanced stomach cancer
Stomach cancer that has progressed can cause more severe symptoms to appear. These symptoms may include:
- Vomiting blood
- Bloody stools
- Unexplained weight loss
- Weakness or fatigue
Having one or more of these symptoms does not necessarily mean you have stomach cancer. Only a physician can accurately determine if your symptoms are due to stomach cancer or a different condition. If you are experiencing symptoms of stomach cancer that worsen or persist after several weeks, promptly schedule an appointment with a physician who can assess your condition and provide you with a diagnosis.
