When Should I See a Uterine Cancer Specialist?
If you’re experiencing symptoms such as pelvic pain or abnormal vaginal bleeding, a uterine cancer specialist can help you determine the cause and the best approach to treatment. As a general guideline, if your symptoms don’t resolve on their own after one to two weeks, it’s best to err on the side of caution and schedule an appointment.
Uterine cancer usually has the widest range of treatment options when it is detected early, which can translate to better outcomes and a higher quality of life. As a result, it is especially important to promptly discuss any unusual symptoms with a specialist who can perform a full assessment.
What to expect when you see a specialist
When you schedule an initial visit with a uterine cancer specialist, he or she will likely:
- Ask you what sort of symptoms you are experiencing and when you first noticed them
- Perform a pelvic exam during which he or she will feel your uterus, ovaries, vagina and rectum
- Recommend one or more additional diagnostic tests, such as a CT scan, MRI or transvaginal ultrasound
If diagnostic testing reveals the presence of abnormal cells, a biopsy may be performed. For this test, a small cell sample is taken from the uterus and sent to a lab for evaluation under a microscope. This can confirm or rule out a diagnosis of uterine cancer.
