The effectiveness of radiation therapy for uterine cancer is truly set apart by expert radiation oncologists. At Moffitt Cancer Center, our patients have access to the latest innovations in radiation treatment equipment and machinery. But, to fully capitalize on their value, these tools must be placed in the hands of professionals who understand precisely how to harness their vast capabilities. These are exactly the types of experts who are on staff at Moffitt.

Moffitt’s Radiation Oncology Program is accredited by the American College of Radiology (ACR). This designation was awarded based on the results of a rigorous review process and verifies that our team is well qualified through education and certification to perform and administer complex radiation therapy treatments. Additionally, Moffitt has an in-house residency program, which provides further confirmation of the proficiency of our team in providing radiation therapy. Based on their exceptional talents, our staff members were chosen to train the next generation of radiation oncologists.

At Moffitt, our experts offer two main types of radiation treatment for uterine cancer:

  • Brachytherapy – Radioactive material is placed in a special applicator device, which is then inserted into a woman’s vagina. Low-dose rate (LDR) brachytherapy requires that the device remain in place for one to four days, while high-dose rate (HDR) brachytherapy treatments are shorter in duration (typically less than one hour). HDR brachytherapy is usually administered in at least three doses that could be scheduled days or weeks apart.
  • External beam radiation therapy – A mold of a woman’s lower back and pelvis is created to ensure that she is properly positioned for each treatment, and for further precision, the delivery point is marked on her skin with a special dye. Beams of radiation are delivered via a machine located outside the woman’s body. Treatments are usually scheduled five days a week over four to six weeks, with each session lasting approximately 30 minutes.

Moffitt’s physicians and researchers collaborate every day to discover cutting-edge therapies for uterine cancer and other types of cancer. This “translational research” is focused on bringing new treatments to our patients as quickly as possible, including the latest clinical trials. These promising studies also contribute to medical research and help develop better cancer treatments for our patients.
