Our interdisciplinary approach to patient care includes collaboration with physicians, physician assistants, nurse practitioners, nurses, medical assistants, pharmacists, social workers, case managers, registered dietitians and research staff.

Radiology Nursing

Radiology nurses possess specialized clinical skills, sound judgment and good interpersonal techniques to provide optimal care for cancer patients with a range of diagnostic and interventional needs. In addition to strong nursing skills, radiology nurses must have a working knowledge of anatomy, computed tomography, ultrasound, MRI, nuclear medicine and interventional radiology. We provide a positive, nurturing atmosphere, along with thorough education, to allay patients’ fears. We recognize that patients who are well-informed and cared for in a positive environment need less sedation and have fewer post-procedure complications. Our radiology nurses work hand-in-hand with the technologist and the radiologist. All of our nurses are Advanced Cardiac Life Support (ACLS) certified and have critical care experience. Onsite training and education assure consistent and quality provision of care.

Radiation Therapy Nursing

The Radiation Therapy Department provides comprehensive diagnostic evaluation, consultation, treatment and education to our diverse cancer patient population. Services include Brain-Stereotatic Radiosurgery, Head & Neck, Thoracic, Breast (Mammosite), Gastrointestinal, Gynecologic (Brachytherapy), Genitourinary, Prostate (Seed Implants), Sarcoma, Cutaneous (Melanoma), and Research. The department works closely with the patient’s interdisciplinary team to provide the best comprehensive cancer treatment.

Our Radiation Therapy nurses practice in a supportive environment using their expert clinical, critical thinking and communications skills to assess and educate patients and families. They work autonomously and in collaboration with the physician to provide individualized patient care. Their responsibilities include nursing assessment, and patient and family education of procedures and side effects. Radiation Therapy nurses also collaborate in the treatment planning and provide symptom management as needed. Our experienced Radiation Therapy nurses receive additional training and education onsite to provide consistent professional nursing care.

Cancer Prevention and Early Detection

The registered nurse at Moffitt Cancer Center Screening and Prevention is an integral member of a unique cancer prevention team that includes medical and surgical oncologists, radiologists, geneticists, genetic counselors and researchers. Our Screening and Prevention nurses are committed to preventing cancer through risk assessment and health promotion, as well as early detection.

The nurse provides clinical support for surveillance of patients at high risk for breast and ovarian cancers, as well as diagnostic evaluation for patients with skin, breast and cervical cancer screening abnormalities. A Screening and Prevention research initiative aimed at identifying causes of cancer will help us more clearly define high-risk populations, discover novel nutraceutical and chemoprevention agents, and develop more sensitive biomarkers for early detection, creating an extraordinary opportunity to practice nursing in an innovative center dedicated to the prevention of cancer.
