breast cancer radiologists review a scan

The Breast Oncology Program at Moffitt Cancer Center's recent adoption of SmartClip® technology for breast cancer surgery represents a significant advancement in our surgeons' ability to precisely localize and remove breast tumors, offering numerous benefits to our patients.

The SmartClip® is a small biocompatible implantable device that allows for 3-dimensional tumor targeting, rather than traditional 2-dimensional wire localization methods. It can be implanted into the tumor site at any time before surgery, providing greater flexibility in scheduling and reducing patient anxiety on the day of the operation.

Dr. Catherine Lee

Marie Lee, MD, FACS, pioneered adopting the use of SmartClip® after the completion of a clinical trial.

During surgery, a detector attached to an operative instrument guides the surgeon to the SmartClip® with millimeter precision while operating. This enhanced accuracy facilitates the removal of tumors with smaller, more cosmetically favorable incisions.

At Moffitt, we've integrated SmartClip® into our comprehensive breast cancer treatment program, which includes state-of-the-art diagnostic imaging, personalized treatment plans and access to clinical trials. Our multidisciplinary team of breast cancer specialists collaborates to provide each patient with the most effective, individualized care possible.

The adoption of this technology aligns with Moffitt's commitment to advancing cancer care through innovative technologies and techniques. As the only National Cancer Institute-designated Comprehensive Cancer Center based in Florida, we continually strive to offer our patients the latest and most effective treatment options, thus enhancing patient outcomes and quality of life.
