SCOUTMD® Radar Localization: Revolutionizing Breast Cancer Surgery at Moffitt Cancer Center
The Breast Oncology Program at Moffitt Cancer Center is proud to be the first cancer center in the U.S. to offer SCOUTMD® Radar Localization, an innovative technology to transform breast cancer surgery procedures. This leading-edge system, provides our breast cancer surgeons unprecedented precision in tumor localization, optimizing surgical outcomes and enhancing patient experience.
Key Benefits of the SCOUTMD® Radar Location
- Precise Tumor Identification: accurately pinpoint tumor location and depth. This capability is crucial for surgeons during breast surgical procedures. Using a hand-held SCOUTMD® probe allows the surgeon to detect the radar reflector implanted in the breast tumor, which in turn facilitates more precision of tumor margin clearance during lumpectomy, while minimizing removal of normal breast tissue.
- Imaging Flexibility: exceptional visibility across various imaging modalities. SCOUTMD's® unique reflector shape provides distinct radiographic and ultrasound images, without significant artifact under MRI. Up to four different reflectors each time can be placed for accurate surgical guidance of breast tumors.
- Streamlined Targeted Axillary Dissection: accelerates easier identification of previously biopsied nodes, even after neoadjuvant chemotherapy. This feature significantly improves the probability of surgical removal and reduces false-negative cancer rates.
Patient-Centric Approach
One of the most significant advantages of the technology is its ability to enhance patient satisfaction. SCOUTMD® can be placed days or weeks prior to the surgical procedures, thus preventing the need for an additional procedure on the day of surgery, as is the case with more traditional wire localization.
Clinical Performance
Studies have demonstrated the efficacy and improved surgical outcomes:
- Improved operating room start times compared to wire localization
- Enhanced axillary evaluation when used for reflector-guided sentinel lymph node biopsy
- Efficient identification of index lymph nodes following neoadjuvant chemotherapy
