“If I could describe Miles for Moffitt in one word it would be: community,” said B. Lee Green, PhD, a senior member of the Health Outcomes and Behavior Department at Moffitt Cancer Center.

For Green, participating in Miles for Moffitt, presented by AutoNation, began as a way to support Moffitt’s mission. Over the years, however, the annual event has evolved into something more meaningful, intertwining with both his personal life and professional endeavors.

In 2006, when Miles for Moffitt officially kicked off, Green was new to the organization. But that didn’t stop him from immediately signing up to participate, as he saw the event's vision and how it could help researchers at Moffitt.

“From day one, I understood the incredible significance of Miles for Moffitt and its ability to advance cancer research,” he explains.

Eighteen years later, Green’s sentiments remain as relevant as ever, with Moffitt's premier fundraising event raising millions for innovative cancer research.

As a researcher, he witnesses firsthand how these funds drive groundbreaking studies and advancements, enabling the exploration of new therapies, the improvement of patient outcomes and addressing cancer health disparities — an area in which he specializes.

"The energy, the people, the resilience of survivors, the dedication of families and the powerful cause that brings us all together—it's a beautiful thing to see," says Green as he describes Miles for Moffitt.

As Miles for Moffitt continued to grow throughout the years, so did Green’s involvement. From participant to volunteer, one thing remained the same, he looked forward to every race.

“Being at the event, I feel a profound sense of hope. It's an uplifting environment, and it almost feels like every step we take during the race contributes to the fight against cancer,” he said.

When asked what inspires him to participate his answer is simple: the strength and determination of the cancer survivors, the families and his excitement for research.

"My commitment to cancer research is deeply personal, fueled by my passion and the experiences of my loved ones who have faced this disease. Witnessing the unity and strength of participants, survivors and supporters at every Miles for Moffitt event is nothing short of inspiring. Having my wife and best friend, Sheila, by my side for each race strengthens the significance of our shared journey. The energy, the people, the resilience of survivors, the dedication of families and the powerful cause that brings us all together—it's a beautiful thing to see."

This year, as Green laces up his shoes and prepares to run the 5k, things will look a little different. He’ll be on a team that holds a very special place in his heart: Team Theresa Jean-Pierre Coy.

A dear friend to Green, who was not only a Moffitt patient, but also an integral part of the George Edgecomb Society efforts where she championed initiatives to address cancer health disparities. The team will honor Theresa’s remarkable life and her courageous battle against cancer.

Green describes his involvement with Miles for Moffitt as a straightforward way to support cancer research funding. He believes the event annually showcases the power of collective efforts in driving significant progress. "I'm thrilled and honored to play my part each time," he said.

He urges anyone considering participating to take a leap and join. Green says your involvement can make an incredible difference and give a sense of community and purpose that’s truly rewarding. It is also great fun for the community and an incredible cause.
