Penile cancer clinical trials allow patients to access the newest treatment options under the supervision of their oncologists. These important research studies allow patients to be among the first to benefit from promising new therapies. Clinical trials also help patients with recurrent or metastatic cancer access a wider range of options than those that are currently available in other settings.
If, at the conclusion of a clinical trial, the treatment being studied is found to be more effective or produce fewer side effects than the currently offered therapies, it may eventually become part of a standard treatment protocol for penile cancer. The only way for a new medication or treatment technique to be approved for widespread use is for it to make its way through the clinical trial process. Several years ago, today’s most effective treatments were only being offered through clinical trials.
Some of the therapies presently under investigation include:
Topical chemotherapy medications for early stage penile cancer
Radiosensitizers, or medications that can make certain cancers more receptive to radiation therapy
Molecular imaging technologies to better diagnose cancers that have spread outside of the penis
Biological and vaccine therapies for advanced or recurrent penile cancers
New studies are being conducted all the time, so the best way to find a recruiting trial is to talk with an oncologist. At Moffitt Cancer Center, our robust clinical trials program and research efforts have earned us recognition as a National Cancer Institute-designated Comprehensive Cancer Center, and we can help interested patients find open studies that might meet their needs. Weekly tumor board meetings allow the multispecialty team of our Urologic Oncology Program to regularly discuss each patient’s progress, and our complete range of supportive care options provide patients with the help they need to improve their quality of life throughout treatment.
