Physical therapy is often an important component of a cancer patient’s rehabilitation process. Maintaining strength during cancer treatments can help patients prevent or minimize the risk of potential complications, such as infection, as well as enhance their overall well-being. Additionally, a patient might find that he or she is moving around much less than usual during or after cancer treatment. This reduction in physical activity can be attributed to a number of factors, including pain, general fatigue and medication side effects. By helping a patient become more active, physical therapy can enhance the recovery process, facilitate functional independence and lead to a higher-quality life.

At Moffitt Cancer Center, we offer a wide range of physical therapy services designed to help our patients build strength, regain independence, alleviate stress and maintain the energy they need to participate in the activities that are most important to them. Through our unique, multispecialty approach to patient care, we establish appropriate goals and then develop an individualized plan for each patient based on input from many experts in various disciplines.

Now that it’s been two years since my surgery, behavioral health is keeping me grounded when worrying about a recurrence and being infected with COVID-19, and I still do the exercises that were given to me by physical therapy.
Cathy Schaffer, Patient Advisor, Patient and Family Advisory Program

Moffitt’s physical therapy services, which are provided by licensed clinicians, can help a patient address:

  • Muscle weakness
  • Reduced range of motion
  • Lost flexibility
  • Walking difficulties
  • Balance issues
  • Postural problems
  • Lymphedema
  • Urinary incontinence

By providing instruction on safe and proper exercise techniques, Moffitt’s physical therapists can help cancer patients regain their quality of life. Many of our patients report that even a small amount of exercise can provide numerous benefits, such as decreased side effects, lower stress levels and a general sense of control over the recovery process.

During a course of physical therapy at Moffitt, our multispecialty team performs ongoing assessments of a patient’s progress and adjusts the treatment plan as necessary to maximize the patient’s physical abilities, comfort level and recovery.
