A patient receiving intraoperative radiotherapy

INTRABEAM® is a revolutionary, intraoperative form of radiation therapy for early-stage breast cancers. Because INTRABEAM® allows radiation treatment and breast-conserving surgery to be performed simultaneously, the need for several weeks of external radiation therapy following surgery can often be minimized or eliminated. This, in turn, can contribute to patient convenience and peace of mind.

When performing a surgical procedure to address a breast cancer tumor, a surgeon can use the INTRABEAM® mobile irradiation device to deliver a carefully measured dosage of radiation directly to the tumor site. As a result, the radiation is delivered precisely to the area with the highest risk of tumor recurrence and the exposure to surrounding healthy tissue is minimized.

The INTRABEAM® radiotherapy delivery system:

  • Converts electricity into low-energy X-rays
  • Delivers radiation treatment through a special spherical applicator
  • Ensures that the radiation beams come into direct contact with the targeted tissue
  • Irradiates a tumor site for several minutes while a patient is under anesthesia for surgery
