Marvin Cox and Nancy Spooner

TAMPA, Fla. — When she was a student at the University of South Florida, Nancy Spooner remembers the fanfare surrounding the grand opening of Moffitt Cancer Center. But the Tampa native admits that she didn’t pay that much attention.

Things changed for her later in life when her father, Marvin, was diagnosed with angiosarcoma, and she spent hours upon hours at the cancer center while he underwent treatment. She credits Moffitt with giving her father two more years with his loved ones, and today she is proud to tell friends that she works for the cancer center that cared for her father and her family.

“It was important to me to find a company that makes a difference in the community with a service that I can fully support,” said Spooner, who is a management assistant in Moffitt’s Corporate Compliance department. “After researching Moffitt I was blown away that this is a top 10 cancer center and by the amount of research that is done right here onsite.”

It was no surprise to Spooner that the Tampa Bay Times once again named Moffitt a Top Workplace for 2018. This is the eighth time Moffitt has been featured on the list.

“In the short amount of time I’ve been here, I can see the difference between Moffitt and other places I’ve worked,” Spooner said. “The teams and departments all work together so well with the goal to prevent and cure cancer. Even on my end, I never work directly with patients, but I work for the patients. I think everyone here has that point of view.”

The 2018 Top Workplaces honor by The Tampa Bay Times is based solely on employee feedback gathered through a third-party survey administered by research partner Energage, LLC (formerly WorkplaceDynamics), a leading provider of technology-based employee engagement tools.  The anonymous survey measures several aspects of workplace culture.

“We are thrilled to receive this recognition for our workplace practices. As an organization we constantly strive to make it possible for our team members to be successful both at work and at home,” said Mariana Bugallo-Muros, vice president and chief human resources officer at Moffitt. “Receiving this particular award is especially exciting because it reflects how our team members feel about Moffitt Cancer Center. We work every day at Moffitt to provide the kind of culture that will foster growth, innovation and respect.”

Spooner deeply appreciates the benefits of working at Moffitt, and she’s also impressed by the longevity of many Moffitt team members.

“The doctors who treated my dad are still here,” she said. “I kept telling people when my dad was going through treatment that angels work at Moffitt. I said that hundreds of times because everyone was so supportive and encouraging, not only to my dad, but to my whole family. They took such good care of us and they continue to do that. This place is full of angels and good people.”

Moffitt is among 100 companies selected for the Top Workplaces award.

Moffitt has made the Top Workplaces list in 2010, 2011, 2012, 2014, 2015, 2016 and 2017. The cancer center is also the No. 6 cancer hospital in the nation based on U.S. News & World Report, a Working Mother Top 100 Company, a DiversityInc Top 10 Hospital and a leader in LGBT Healthcare Equality. Moffitt has also earned the Magnet designation in recognition of its nursing excellence.
