TAMPA, Fla. (Aug. 27, 2019) — Moffitt Cancer Center recently earned the prestigious Magnet designation for the second time from the American Nurses Credentialing Center, the credentialing body of the American Nurses Association. Only 8% of U.S. hospitals achieve Magnet status and patients rely on this designation as the ultimate credential for high-quality nursing.

Magnet recognition is among the highest honors acknowledging excellence in nursing practice in the United States. It recognizes nursing professionalism, teamwork, quality patient care and innovations in nursing practices. Magnet-designated facilities consistently maintain:

  • Higher patient satisfaction with nurse communication, availability of help, and receipt of discharge information
  • Lower risk of 30-day mortality and lower failure to rescue
  • Lower rates of falls
  • Higher job satisfaction among nurses

Moffitt earned its first Magnet designation in 2015 and now joins the ranks of a select few health care organizations that have earned this coveted four-year designation multiple times.

“Being redesignated as a Magnet hospital is a testament to our commitment to providing exceptional patient care,” Moffitt’s chief nursing officer Jane Fusilero explains. “It speaks to the professionalism of our nurses and their dedication to collaborate with other members of the health care team to deliver the highest standards of care to our patients every day.”

In order to be Magnet designated, a facility must undergo a rigorous process, which includes a lengthy application, on-site visit, review by the Commission on Magnet Recognition and compliance in more than 80 areas.
