National Health Care Human Resources Week is designated to recognize human resource professionals in health care organizations across the country for their important role in ensuring compassionate and quality care.

At Moffitt Cancer Center, the Human Resources (HR) and Organizational Development (OD) teams wear many hats to ensure that team members can be at the best for our patients. And although the team mission may be the same, each member has their unique reason as to why they work in Moffitt’s HR department.

Marolda Cameron, manager of Integrated Disability and Absence Management, says her drive for people and human beings are what motivates her to work in HR.

“I have a passion for the human experience and believe that there is a way that we all can impact the quality of life for each person we meet,” said Cameron. “I love helping people bring clarity to areas where they lack understanding.”

For Cameron, it is also Moffitt’s mission to contribute to the prevention and cure of cancer that connects her to the cancer center.

“It was imperative that I work in partnership with a great mission,” she said. “Moffitt’s mission is one of the main reasons why I decided to apply for my role.”

As a patient and team member, Kim Clarke gets to experience Moffitt from both sides. She says her unique experience makes her proud to be a team member.

Clarke, a Human Resources business partner, has been with the cancer center for six and a half years and simply enjoys helping her fellow team members.

“What I enjoy most about working in HR is the ability to help someone – that could be with an issue they are having at work or finding the job that is the right fit for them,” said Clarke. “I am a big advocate for helping others – if you can help, you should.”

Stacey Johnson, Organizational Learning and Development specialist, also enjoys helping people. In fact, she gets her motivation from the people she services.

“I'm a helper. I love helping people any way I can,” said Johnson. “Seeing someone have that 'ah-ha' moment when they find the missing connection is one of the most satisfying parts of my job.”

And during the pandemic, Johnson’s spirit of helping continued as she and her team quickly transitioned Moffitt’s in person orientation into a completely virtual experience within two weeks, ensuring that new team members didn’t miss a step in their onboarding process.

“Our new team members were able to be welcomed to our organization by the same smiling faces, just like they would pre-COVID,” said Johnson.  “They could experience who we are, our culture and our values in real life! Moffit is always giving a little extra to our team members, so I always try to give a little extra back to Moffitt.”

While many may think of HR as a supportive or administrative department, at Moffitt they also provide hands on care through Team Member Health Services. Team members utilize this service through the team member medical clinic or during their onboarding with Occupational Health.

As the operations lead registered nurse in Occupational Health, Karen Paul-Green says she likes being a role model to her team, keeping Moffitt safe for team members and also helping new hires with their employment requirements.

“Being part of HR, I can draw on my past experiences to be a role model and strengthen my team. We work with other teams within HR to ensure new hires meet Moffitt’s employment requirements, while also working with departments across Moffitt on maintaining a safe workplace for our team members,” said Paul-Green. “I enjoy helping new hires have a warm and efficient start to their employment with Moffitt, giving a great first impression.”

Staying true to her word of keeping team members safe, during COVID-19 Paul-Green and her team stepped up and worked tirelessly to ensure that Moffitt team members stayed safe, even in the beginning when little was known about the virus. She and the team provided guidance to those with questions, while also monitoring team members potentially affected by the virus.

“We could hear the fear and anxiety in our team members as they voiced their concerns,” said Paul-Green. “Therefore, it was important to be understanding, listen and reinforce the measures implemented to promote the health and safety of the Moffitt team.”

Cameron, Clarke, Johnson, Paul-Green, and the rest of the Human Resource and Organizational Development departments are some of the essential components that keep the cancer center going. During National Health Care Human Resource Week, we salute and say thank you to all of our HR and OD professionals for all that they do to foster a positive culture at Moffitt.
