Home Runs and Hope

By Lizette Robles - October 02, 2019

2019 has been historic for the Tampa Bay Rays with 162 games, 217 home runs and a playoff berth. But the magic of Rays baseball hasn’t stopped on the field. The club helped raise more than $255,000 for Moffitt Cancer Center this season.

“Moffitt Cancer Center is a proud partner of the Tampa Bay Rays,” said B. Lee Green, Ph.D., vice president of Moffitt Diversity, Public Relations and Strategic Communications. “The team is a pillar in our community and their philanthropic efforts help support many organizations, including Moffitt. We are incredibly grateful for their support.”

Throughout the year, Moffitt and the Rays team up for community events aimed at raising awareness for cancer.

During spring training, Moffitt’s Mole Patrol® hits the road for the Spring Swing® Sun Safety Tour. Skin cancer experts visit spring training venues throughout Florida to perform free skin cancer screenings for fans. In the 12 years of the Spring Swing program, 4,754 baseball fans have been screened and 4,865 suspicious skin liaisons have been detected.

Throughout the regular season, Moffitt patients like Theresa Jean-Pierre Coy are invited to Tropicana Field to participate in the Salute to Survivors program.

“This is a once in a lifetime opportunity to be a year out from beating cancer. Celebrating with Moffitt and the Rays is just an incredible feeling,” said Jean-Pierre Coy.

The team has been a loyal supporter of the annual Miles for Moffitt. With help from players and mascot Raymond’s Kids Dash, the Tampa Bay Rays have raised thousands of dollars over the years to support cancer research at Moffitt.
