Duodenal resection is a form of treatment for patients with small intestine cancer. At Moffitt Cancer Center, this procedure can be performed either traditionally or robotically. To determine if one of these approaches is a suitable treatment for a patient with small intestine cancer, a multispecialty team comprised of surgical oncologists, medical oncologists, pathologists, radiation oncologists, radiologists and other experts who focus solely on cancers of the gastrointestinal tract will review the patient’s case and work together to develop an individualized course of treatment.
For some patients, robotic duodenal resection can provide a number of advantages over an open duodenal resection. Rather than requiring a large incision, a robotic duodenal resection is minimally invasive and performed through a series of small incisions using the da Vinci® Surgical System. Moffitt surgeons are highly trained and experienced in using this system, which utilizes small, wristed instruments to mimic the surgeon’s hand movements, providing exceptional precision and a greater range of motion than what is possible of a human hand. As a result, patients who undergo this advanced procedure may benefit from:
- Less surgical blood loss
- Less scarring
- Less pain during recovery
- Shorter recovery times
