Meningioma screening tests, such as CT scans and MRIs, may be recommended for people who have an elevated risk of developing this type of brain cancer. This group may include individuals who have been diagnosed with neurofibromatosis type 2, a genetic disorder that can be a precursor for certain types of brain tumors, and people who were previously diagnosed with meningioma and are now in remission.

Meningioma screening can be especially beneficial because these tumors are very slow growing and can go undetected for quite some time. As a result, physicians may recommend routine imaging tests for high-risk patients to check for any unusual developments near the brain or spinal cord.

Currently, there are no set recommendations for how often an at-risk individual should have a meningioma screening test or which type of imaging scan should be used. At Moffitt, we create individualized screening plans that reflect each patient’s unique needs, taking into account factors such as:

  • Age – older adults may benefit more from frequent screenings than younger adults
  • Sex – women are more likely to develop meningiomas than men, which may influence their recommended screening schedules
  • Personal health history – people who are currently in remission from a previous brain tumor, as well as those who have epilepsy or neurofibromatosis type 2, may benefit from more frequent screenings

At Moffitt Cancer Center, we offer the latest advances in cancer screening and diagnosis. This includes low-dose CT scans and comprehensive physical exams, both of which play a valuable role in meningioma screening. The images taken during a patient’s screening are interpreted by our team of experienced radiologists, who have specialized training in diagnosing tumors of the brain and spinal cord.
