Radiation therapy is an integral part of ductal carcinoma in situ treatment. In many cases, radiation therapy is recommended after surgery; even though it’s often possible to remove all of the cancerous cells from the milk ducts through a lumpectomy or mastectomy, radiation therapy can help ensure that the entire malignancy has been destroyed.

Even when a patient has all of his or her breast tissue removed, radiation therapy may still be recommended to help reduce the risk of the cancer coming back. Some studies suggest that radiation therapy for ductal carcinoma in situ can reduce the risk of recurrence by up to 60 percent – a statistic that leads many patients to choose post-operative radiation therapy for their own peace of mind.

Although most patients can benefit from radiation therapy for ductal carcinoma in situ, it may be especially beneficial for:

  • Patients whose tumors are especially large
  • Patients with high-grade malignancies
  • Patients whose tumors are not hormone receptor-positive (and therefore who are not likely to benefit from post-operative hormone therapy)

At Moffitt Cancer Center, we look at the total picture to help each patient select the most appropriate treatment options for his or her specific needs. We offer a number of different radiation therapy options, including external beam radiation therapy, whole-breast irradiation and brachytherapy (removable radioactive implants). These treatments are provided by a team of experts who each focus on a specific aspect of the treatment process, making them some of the most specialized providers in their respective fields. Between our skilled oncologists and state-of-the-art technologies, we’re able to produce breast cancer treatment outcomes that are routinely better than the national averages, as well as enhance the quality of life for our patients.

Referrals are not required to come to Moffitt. Patients interested in radiation therapy for ductal carcinoma in situ can request an appointment by calling 1-888-663-3488, or by submitting a new patient registration form online.
