Ileocolectomy for Colon Cancer
An ileocolectomy is a surgical treatment for colon cancer in which the right side of the colon is removed and the remaining sections are joined together. This surgery can be performed as a traditional, open operation or a minimally invasive procedure. A surgeon can recommend the best ileocolectomy approach for a patient after an in-depth review of the patient’s diagnosis.
At Moffitt Cancer Center, we create an individualized treatment plan for each patient. We’ve treated patients with all types and stages of colon cancer, including rare and complex cases that require unique approaches to surgery. We consider a number of different factors when recommending a surgical treatment plan, including:
- The size, stage and location of a patient’s tumor
- The potential outcome of each option
- The impact a procedure may have on a patient’s quality of life
As with any other type of surgery for colon cancer, an ileocolectomy requires a patient to make certain lifestyle adjustments during recovery. To assist with this process, Moffitt offers an extensive range of supportive care services, such as dietary counseling to help patients choose foods to ease digestion. And, should additional treatments, such as chemotherapy or radiation therapy, be necessary after surgery, these services are available in the same, convenient location, with all treatments coordinated by a multispecialty team of experts.
