Research

Dr. Schmit’s research combines wet and dry lab approaches and statistical genetic techniques to better understand the roles of genetic susceptibility, molecular markers, and environmental factors in the development of colorectal cancer and the modulation of disease progression and outcomes. Recently, her integrative molecular epidemiology approach has placed a special emphasis on host immune responses in the tumor microenvironment. Ultimately, her work aims to inform the design of tailored screening and pharmacogenomic strategies that may improve prevention, early detection, and response to treatment for colorectal and other gastrointestinal cancers.
