The Fix It Guy- Meet Gene
It’s rare to find Gene sitting still. He’s an incredibly active man with a passion for a long list of sports, including stand-up paddle boarding. But in 2009, his athletic abilities were in jeopardy. Unbearable back pain brought him to the emergency room, where it was discovered that a tumor in his kidney had metastasized to his vertebrae.
Signs of Kidney Cancer
- Bloody Urine
- Persistent pain in your side that wasn't caused by an injury
- Unexplained weight loss
Some friends in the medical field insisted that he go to Moffitt for treatment. There, he and his surgeon talked statistics. And while statistics are undeniably useful benchmarks, together they agreed that Gene was an outlier. After all, he was in exceptional health, aside from the cancer. So he approached his treatment courageously and methodically, always focusing on the next step.
The Finish Line
Today, Gene is stronger and feels inspired to give back. For the past six years, he has hosted a very successful stand-up paddleboarding event – appropriately named Paddle Against Cancer – to raise awareness for cancer research, funds for Moffitt and hope for those still fighting their own battle.
