Volunteer holding hands with patient

The Comfort Companion Program offers patients the most valuable of human gifts: a dignified death. Trained volunteers will provide a comforting, reassuring presence for patients and families. Sometimes this involves holding their hand, reading aloud, or playing soothing music.

What to Expect:

Flexible shifts (based on your availability) that will typically last for two to four hours. Training and ongoing support are provided, with an emphasis on providing comfort during the dying process. Shifts are scheduled 24 hours a day, so night and weekend availability is necessary.

The application process will include an electronic application, interview (for non-Moffitt volunteers and team members), health screening, orientation and training.

Step 1 – All applicants must be 18 or older at the time of application to be eligible to volunteer at Moffitt Cancer Center.

Step 2 – Complete the electronic application. The application will be open from 8 a.m., Tuesday, January 2, 2024 – 4 p.m., Monday, January 29, 2024. You will need to attach a copy of your government-issued ID and the completed background check form to the application in order to submit.

Step 3 – Non-Moffitt volunteers and Team Members will be scheduled for a virtual interview with a member of the Volunteer Services Department between January 16 and February 2, 2024.

Step 4 – Attend a virtual orientation session on January 29, 2024 or February 12, 2024, from 8:30 a.m. – 12:30 p.m.

Step 5 – Must attend an in-person training on Wednesday, February 28, 2024, from 9 a.m. - 2 p.m in the SRB Ted and Marty Auditorium.

Current Moffitt volunteers and team members are encouraged to apply.
