Bladder Cancer Surgery for Patients from Fort Myers & Naples, Florida

For patients with bladder cancer, surgery may be recommended as a form of treatment. When considering surgery, it is important for a patient to take into account the level of experience of the surgeon who will perform the procedure. Moffitt Cancer Center is a high-volume cancer center in Tampa with a team of surgeons whose expertise surpasses that of many other providers. We welcome local patients as well as those from Fort Myers and Naples, Florida.

When a patient seeks treatment for bladder cancer at Moffitt, a multispecialty team will work together to develop an individualized treatment plan that may include surgery. The bladder cancer surgery options we offer include:

  • Transurethral surgery (TUR) – Noninvasive bladder tumors are removed with a resectoscope that is inserted through the urethra (without the need for a surgical incision).
  • Segmental cystectomy – A part of the bladder is removed; the unaffected part is then sealed to preserve its function.
  • Radical cystectomy with extended lymph node dissection – The entire bladder and surrounding lymph nodes are removed. This type of bladder cancer surgery may also include the removal of the fallopian tubes, uterus, ovaries and a portion of the vagina in women or the prostate gland in men.
  • Reconstructive surgery – A surgeon creates a urinary diversion so that the body can continue to store and pass urine after the entire bladder is removed.

As a National Cancer Institute-designated Comprehensive Cancer Center, Moffitt is a nationally recognized leader in clinical research, and we are continually exploring new bladder cancer treatment options to better serve our patients. We offer a complete range of services in a single location, including lab tests and supportive care. We can also provide information on local accommodations for patients who travel to Moffitt from Fort Myers, Naples or other areas of Florida.
