Fanny was first diagnosed with esophageal cancer in 2009. She received her treatment and care at Moffitt Cancer Center. We had a chance to sit down with Fanny and ask about her experiences at Moffitt since her diagnosis and treatment.

What were the symptoms you experienced leading up to your diagnosis?

Leading up to my diagnosis, when I used to eat, I would feel something in my upper abdomen, like there was something sitting there. When I ate, it felt a little bit like food would get stuck right below my chest.

What went through your mind when you first received your diagnosis of esophageal cancer?

I actually wasn’t too scared. I handled my diagnosis pretty well.

Fanny was diagnosed with esophageal cancer in 2009.What lead you to choose Moffitt for your treatment?

I am from South Florida and we saw different physicians there before coming to Moffitt. The treatment they wanted to give there was to remove my whole esophagus but quality of life was very important to me. I have a friend who is a registered, certified case manager and certified rehabilitation nurse - Lilianna - who told me I have to come to Moffitt Cancer Center. She pushed me really hard to come here, and even recommended a specific doctor for me. We are really grateful to her for recommending Moffitt.

How has your treatment experience been at Moffitt?

Perfect. In one word I would have to say perfect. All my physicians have been wonderful. The team approach made me feel much more assured in my treatment and care.

How was your nursing care at Moffitt?

Our nurse Gloria is the greatest. All the people, including the nurses, here have been wonderful, but nurse Gloria is the best.

How has your quality of life been since your treatment for esophageal cancer?

There have been no changes in my quality of life. I feel the same. I have a strong spirit so I feel the same as I did before.

How has the support you have received at Moffitt been?

Dr. Sarah Hoffe is everything for us. She is so sweet and I felt really connected with her. This place and the people here are the best of the best. I felt really comfortable being treated here.
