TAMPA, Fla. — Lisa Logan started participating in Miles for Moffitt in 2013, when her employer, AutoNation, became a sponsor. It was an opportunity for her to rally with her co-workers and give back to cancer research. But she never imagined that one day she would face cancer.

In 2015, Logan found a lump in her breast and was diagnosed with invasive ductal carcinoma, the most common type of breast cancer. It came as a shock — she was 41 and had no prior family history.

“Like most, I was scared and uncertain about where to begin,” said Logan.

First she found a surgeon, then quickly started chemotherapy. She vowed not to let treatment keep her from the Miles for Moffitt 5K. It was a whole new experience participating as a cancer patient.

As she struggled on the course, Logan found inspiration from a stranger.

“A woman who was running in front of me turned around and said, ‘I’m running for you. You are why I do this.’ I had never met this woman before and she had no idea who I was,” said Logan. “I was so moved and Miles for Moffitt took on a whole new meaning for me.”

After finishing chemotherapy, Logan had a lumpectomy and her lymph nodes removed. She also received radiation. Today she is cancer free and credits her successful outcome to the advancement of cancer research, which is funded through events like Miles for Moffitt.

For the past seven years, AutoNation has been the presenting sponsor for Miles for Moffitt. It means a lot to employees like Logan.

“I am so proud to work for a company that not only supported me throughout my journey but also supports such a great cause,” said Logan. “AutoNation has become even more supportive of their associates who become affected by offering a cancer insurance policy.”

Even though she calls her experience traumatic, Logan says she is very fortunate to have had the resources and support available to her and hopes to inspire others the same way a stranger inspired her.

Over the past 14 years, Miles for Moffitt has raised over $6.4 million supporting lifesaving research studies at Moffitt Cancer Center and has gained millions in additional federal support, helping patients like Logan.
