Moffitt Cancer Center’s Dr. Steven Eschrich Named to National Academy of Inventors
TAMPA, Fla. — Steven Eschrich, Ph.D., senior member of the Biostatistics and Bioinformatics Department at Moffitt Cancer Center, has been named a fellow of the National Academy of Inventors. Election to academy fellow status is a professional distinction given to academic inventors who have demonstrated a prolific spirit of innovation in creating or facilitating outstanding inventions that have made a tangible impact on quality of life, economic development and the welfare of society.
Eschrich joined Moffitt in 2003. His work involves using data science in translational cancer research, specifically developing molecular signatures for precision cancer diagnosis, prognosis and response to therapy. His focus is on molecular analysis of gene expression and proteomics and has developed software tools, algorithms and intelligent systems for bioinformatics applications in cancer. Eschrich holds seven patents and, with Javier Torres-Roca, M.D., developed a gene signature to predict tumor response to radiation, which has been licensed to Cvergenx, Inc.
The 2020 NAI Fellow class represents 115 research universities and governmental and nonprofit research institutes worldwide. They collectively hold over 4,700 issued U.S. patents. Among the 2020 fellows are 24 recipients of the National Academies of Sciences, Engineering and Medicine, six recipients of the American Academy of Arts & Sciences, and two Nobel laureates. Their collective body of research covers a range of scientific disciplines including biomedical engineering, computer engineering, materials science and physics.
The class of fellows will be inducted at the 2021 Fellows Induction Ceremony at the Tenth Annual Meeting of the National Academy of Inventors this June in Tampa.
