Moffitt Cancer Center presents “La Ciudad se Viste de Rosa” May 21
TAMPA, Fla. — Hispanic women may be less likely to discuss their own health with their families or their friends. To address this need, Moffitt Cancer Center is presenting “La Ciudad se Viste de Rosa” with Genesis Radio on Saturday, May 21.
The event, which encourages Spanish-speaking women to attend in person or virtually, will feature speakers from the health care field discussing the importance of screenings and regular doctor appointments. It’s a way to ensure that women are around to care for their families, said organizer Jeannette Palencia, senior community outreach worker with Moffitt’s Office of Community Outreach, Engagement and Equity.
“Some Hispanic women may put themselves and their own health behind the health of their families,” Palencia said. “Plus, they have challenges like finding health insurance or even transportation to the doctor.”
This event will give Moffitt a chance to provide guidance for this specific community of women so they know what resources are available where they live. This is the first year for “La Ciudad se Viste de Rosa” and Tampa will light up several iconic structures in pink the night of the event. It’s a way to symbolize the importance of women’s health, Palencia said.
“We will have a presentation about breast cancer awareness, which is of course essential to women’s health,” Palencia said. “We all relate the color pink to breast cancer awareness month in October, but breast health and health in general should be at the forefront of women’s minds throughout the year.”
The inaugural event will be hosted by Iglesia La Verdad Tampa and is available for church groups, organizations and others to stream live through registration.
“La Ciudad se Viste de Rosa” is presented by Moffitt Cancer Center and Genesis Radio with CarePlus Health, Iglesia La Verdad Tampa and Natalie Fernandez of Keller Williams Realty.
