TAMPA, Fla. — For three years, Anita Berlingo has worked as a medical necessity coder at Moffitt Cancer Center. It’s a role she loves at an institution she respects and admires. So it was no surprise to her that Moffitt is once again one of the Tampa Bay Times Top Workplaces for 2019. This is the ninth time Moffitt has made the list.

“When you work for the best, you see the difference,” said Berlingo, who is responsible for providing the appropriate coding and documentation to insurance companies for patients. “I worked for some great companies in Connecticut that took good care of their employees, and I was concerned that I wouldn’t find that here in Florida when I came to take care of my parents.”

But when she found a position within Moffitt that matched her experience, she felt a sense of comfort and accomplishment.

“You need to know how your job affects the people before you in line and those who are behind you in the process,” Berlingo said. “Everyone overlaps and supports each other, and that’s exactly how things work here. You don’t see that a whole lot.”

The Top Workplaces list is based solely on employee feedback gathered through a third-party survey administered by the Tampa Bay Times’ research partner Energage, LLC, a leading provider of technology-based employee engagement tools. The anonymous survey measures several aspects of workplace culture, including alignment, execution, and connection, just to name a few.

“It is again an honor to be recognized by the Tampa Bay Times as a best employer,” said Mariana Bugallo-Muros, vice president and chief human resources officer at Moffitt. “We are committed to providing an accommodating and flexible environment so that our team members can find balance in both their personal and professional lives. It’s exciting to know that our team members are proud to work here and engaged in and contributing to Moffitt’s mission and culture.”

Moffitt’s commitment to its patients also inspires Berlingo, who adds that the focus on patient care is what makes her proud to share where she works with new friends.

“Our patients are dealing with cancer, and often it’s a life or death situation and they are scared,” she said. “Anything we can do to lower their stress level is amazing to them and I love that when they are here, they know that they are being taken care of and being taken care of correctly.”

Moffitt has made the Top Workplaces list in 2010, 2011, 2012, 2014, 2015, 2016, 2017 and 2018. The cancer center is a Top 10 cancer hospital in the nation based on U.S. News & World Report. Moffitt is also a Working Mother Top 100 Company, a DiversityInc Top 10 Hospital and a leader in LGBTQ Healthcare Equality. Moffitt has also earned the Magnet designation in recognition of its nursing excellence.
