Moffitt Cancer Center Invites Hispanic Community to Latinos y el Cáncer
TAMPA, Fla. – Cancer is the leading cause of death among Hispanics in the United States. That is why Moffitt Cancer Center is reaching out to the Hispanic community to invite them to attend Latinos y el cáncer, a free educational symposium conducted entirely in Spanish. The event will take place Saturday, Oct. 6 from 9 a.m. to 2 p.m. at Moffitt’s Vincent A. Stabile Research Building.
The Latinos y el cáncer Educational Symposium is designed to provide cancer education and resources to the Hispanic community. Physicians and researchers from Moffitt and its partner Ponce Health Sciences University in Puerto Rico will hold interactive sessions to discuss cancer prevention, early detection, physical health and nutrition.
“Florida has a large Hispanic population. Through our biennial educational event, we would like to provide the community with information about cancer and helpful ways to reduce cancer risk. For example, this year we will have sessions on the risk of cancer due to human papillomavirus, hepatitis C virus, and genetics,” said Susan Vadaparampil, PhD, MPH, co-director, Outreach Core, Ponce Health Sciences-Moffitt Cancer Center U54 Partnership.
Attendees will have the opportunity to hear testimonials from patients and survivors about the emotional impact of cancer. There will also be free skin cancer screenings and the opportunity to register for the National Marrow Donor Program to become a potential bone marrow donor.
