Moffitt Cancer Center Breaks Ground on New Hospital
TAMPA, Fla. — Over the next 10 years, Moffitt Cancer Center anticipates a 65% increase in patient volumes and a 33% increase in cancer surgeries. As Moffitt serves more patients locally and internationally, the need for additional space is more important than ever. To meet this growing demand, Moffitt broke ground today on a new $400 million inpatient surgical hospital on its McKinley campus.
The new hospital will be a 10-story, 498,000-square-foot facility located on 20 acres across from the Richard M. Schulze Family Foundation Outpatient Center. Starting with 128 inpatient beds, it will have the capacity to expand to 400. The new facility will feature 19 operating rooms, 72 perioperative rooms, three MRI scanners, three CT scanners and two nuclear cameras.
“This new facility will expand our capacity for inpatient hospital care and will modernize our ability to treat and cure cancer,” said Jack Kolosky, Moffitt’s hospital president and chief operating officer. “This hospital will increase the power and speed with which Moffitt can translate our discoveries to the benefit of all people. It will blend the most advanced medical and surgical technologies with a patient-centered approach that brings us closer to achieving our vision — to transform cancer care through service, science and partnership.”
The new site will also include a central utility plant of approximately 26,000 square feet. A three-story parking garage is included in the plans along with a connecting bridge over McKinley Drive that will link the new structure with the outpatient center.
Moffitt’s new hospital will generate $298 million in construction value within the local economy. Focusing on hiring minority, women, veteran and service-disabled veteran-owned business enterprises, Moffitt is committed to a supplier diversity goal of 15% over the span of this project. In salaries, this project will create upwards of $120 million for workers on the construction site. The project will involve about 5,500 workers total, with approximately 550 per day at the construction’s peak time.
“This new hospital will be a place for firsts. New discoveries will be made here. New procedures will be performed. Through this state-of-the-art facility, we will revolutionize the way patient care is delivered at Moffitt,” said Kolosky.
Moffitt has partnered with Barr & Barr, Inc., Hammes Company, HDR and Horus Construction Services, Inc. Construction will begin in July 2020 and the new hospital will plan to open in July 2023.
