TAMPA, Fla. — Moffitt Cancer Center is once again considered an LGBTQ Healthcare Equality Leader by the Human Rights Campaign Foundation after scoring a 100% on the organization’s annual survey. This marks the eighth consecutive year that the cancer center has appeared on the Healthcare Equality Index (HEI). Moffitt remains the only Florida cancer center on the list.

“Moffitt’s mission to prevent and cure cancer encompasses every community,” said Alan F. List, M.D., Moffitt president and CEO. “Inclusion is an important part of our corporate values, and our Diversity team has done an amazing job ensuring a diverse range of communities know our services are accessible. We couldn’t be more proud to once again be named a Healthcare Equality Leader.”

This year’s survey included a higher benchmark, requiring organizations to demonstrate that they offer at least one companywide health insurance plan that provides transgender-inclusive coverage in order to earn the top score of 100. Moffitt met that benchmark.

“To have this designation for eight years in a row speaks volumes, and for the cancer center to once again have a perfect score highlights our commitment to diversity and the LGBTQ community,” said B. Lee Green, Ph.D., vice president of Diversity, Public Relations and Strategic Communications at Moffitt. “Everyone deserves equal access to the best cancer care regardless of whom they love or how they identify.”

The Healthcare Equality Index is the national LGBTQ benchmarking tool that evaluates health care facilities’ policies and practices related to the equity and inclusion of their LGBTQ patients, visitors and employees. The index is based on four criteria:

  • Non-Discrimination and Staff Training
  • Patient Services and Support Employee Benefits and Policies
  • Patient and Community Engagement
  • Employment Nondiscrimination

The Human Rights Campaign Foundation/HRC is the educational arm of America’s largest civil rights organization working to achieve equality for lesbian, gay, bisexual, transgender and queer people. HRC envisions a world where LGBTQ people are embraced as full members of society at home, at work and in every community.
