Dear Friends,

June is a very special month during which we celebrate a pivotal day in American History, Juneteenth, observed on June 19. For Moffitt Cancer Center, this day goes hand in hand with our commitment to equity, inclusion and the eradication of health disparities.

The celebration of Juneteenth reminds us of the vital importance of accessible, compassionate care for all regardless of race or background. At the cancer center it inspires our efforts in addressing the unique cancer challenges faced by those in the Black community, who have historically faced barriers to quality health care. As we honor Juneteenth, we reaffirm our dedication to the prevention and cure of cancer and advancing research that serves every individual with dignity and respect.

In this issue of our newsletter, we highlight George Edgecomb Scholar, Tiffany Carson, PhD, and her new roles at Moffitt. Carson was named co-leader of Moffitt’s Health Outcomes and Behavior Program and most recently, named scientific director of Moffitt’s Population Engagement and Research Laboratory, (PEARL). We also highlight the efforts of a Tampa Bay area nonprofit organization working to raise awareness of multiple myeloma, a disease that disproportionately affects Black men and women.

You can also read about Moffitt’s new Patient and Family Advisory Council member, Vondalyn Wright, how one Moffitt researcher is using math to improve cancer health equity and other inspiring stories!

Thank you for your commitment to health equity and the George Edgecomb Society. To learn more about how you can get involved, contact us on the George Edgecomb Society page or call the Moffitt Foundation directly at (813) 745-1403.
