For patients requiring resection of a bone tumor, these surgeries can be complicated owing to the three-dimensional anatomy of the bony structures being operated on. However, with advances in navigated technology, the way these resections are performed and subsequently reconstructed has evolved.

Increasing research demonstrates that navigated resections, especially in complicated locations like the pelvis, can improve cancer-specific outcomes. These technologies allow for precise bone cuts ensuring more consistent and predictable margin negative surgery. These technologies also allow for more accurate and predictable bony reconstruction as well.

Moffitt Cancer Center’s Sarcoma Program is a leader in navigated resections utilizing both intraoperative CT navigation and custom patient-specific cutting guide technology. With an array of technologies at our disposal, and a long history of utilizing these technologies, our goal is to continue to push towards more precise bony surgery for improved cancer and patient-related outcomes.

Custom implants are also being increasingly utilized. This technology allows for patient-specific and personalized reconstruction of large bony defects to improve the function of the patients postoperatively. In the pediatric space, this means designing custom expandable “growing” prostheses that grow with pediatric patients who have not yet achieved skeletal maturity.

In adults, designing custom implants that help to push the limits for reconstruction in challenging spaces such as the pelvis or the extremities where historically bony reconstructive modalities would be likely to fail. Moffitt’s Orthopaedic Oncology team has extensive experience with designing, building and implanting these customized reconstructive solutions into patients.

Moffitt is currently leading several multi-institution collaborative studies investigating the outcomes of this customized implant technology.
